Laser Hair Removal FAQ's

How does Laser Hair Removal Work?

The Medical Grade Lasers at SILK Laser Clinics Adelaide operate within a single wavelength of energy that is specifically targeted to the pigment in the hair follicle. This is called “selective photothermolysis”. By specifically targeting the Lasers energy, it is then absorbed directly in to the cells lining the hair follicle and destroying them for future hair growth.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

According to the FDA (Food and Drug Association), no lasers can claim to have achieved “permanent hair removal”. FDA Approved Medical Grade Lasers can usually achieve permanent hair “reduction” with approximately a 70% – 90% reduction in hair growth. These results are dependent on the individual and can be influenced by such things as skin type, hair colour, and hormones.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

The lasers at SILK Laser Clinics Adelaide all come with a patented Dynamic Cooling Device, which gives the skin a short spray of cryogen milliseconds before the laser pulse. This dramatically improves the clients comfort and renders the hair removal treatment almost painless.

Many clients have likened the treatment to the feeling of having an elastic band snapped against the skin. Please note that all clients pain thresholds differ substantially though and if pain is an issue, a topical anaesthetic can be applied prior to treatment.

Is Laser Hair Removal Expensive?

At SILK Laser Clinics Adelaide, laser hair removal treatments start from as little as $15 for Men and $30 for Women. This makes laser hair removal treatment extremely affordable when comparing to ongoing costs of alternative hair removal (shaving, waxing, etc). For more information on pricing, please refer to our specials page.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments can vary dependant on the individual and can be influenced by skin type, hair colour, medications, and hormones.

Depending on the area being treated, a course of 6 – 8 treatments are required to achieve the most significant lasting hair reduction results. At SILK we recommend patients start with a course of 6 treatments and then evaluate the effectiveness from there.

As hair growth is cyclical, it is also recommended that a treatment is completed every 4 – 6 weeks until the entire course is completed.

Who will be treating me?

All treatments will be performed by our highly trained and laser qualified SILK Laser Hair Removal Therapists.

What areas can be treated?

Nearly all areas of the human body are treatable. For a list of our most commonly treated areas, find your nearest location here.

What if I am pregnant?

Although the Candela GentleLASE is fine to use while pregnant, at SILK Laser Clinics, we recommend that you should not undergo treatment of any form of Laser during your pregnanncy. If you have pre purchased a course and then become pregnant, we will hold all outstanding unused treatments for when you return to begin treatment after the birth of your child.

What if I have small children?

Please note that it is not safe to have your children inside the consult room during laser treatment. This is because the laser produces a bright light that could affect their eyes. We recommend to not bring your child with you or to bring somebody else who can mind your child in the waiting room during treatment.

Does Sun Exposure Affect my Treatments?

The laser specifically targets the pigment within the hair follicle. Consequently, it is important not to affect the skins pigmentation in anyway prior to and post the laser treatments. Such exposure can cause hypo and hyper pigmentation, deterring the effects of the laser treatment.

Please avoid the sun or solariums 2 – 4 weeks prior to treatment and at least 2 weeks after treatment. Be sure to also apply sunscreen hourly while you are exposed. Do also not use any form of tanning throughout your treatment, including tanning sprays or lotions. Please refer to our skincare for a list of products that may be suitable for your needs.

What if I am on Medication?

There are only a few medications that could possibly affect the treatments of laser hair removal. These medications include Roaccutane and Retin-A as both of these medications can alter the pigmentation in the individual’s skin. It is recommended that Roaccutane be ceased up to 6 months prior to treatment and Retin-A at least 2 – 4 weeks prior to treatment.
